Code of Ethics
and Professional Guidelines
-
Ensuring
Accuracy:
The interpreter renders all
utterances and written communication accurately, using the same
grammatical person as the speaker or writer, conveying to the best
of his/her ability the equivalent message without addition,
deletion, modification or distortion. The interpreter assumes full
responsibility for the accuracy of his/her interpretation.
Interpreting services are provided by individuals who have extensive
knowledge of both the target language and the source language.
-
Observing Role
Boundaries:
The role of the interpreter in an
interview is to convey in a target language the contents of the
message expressed in the source language. Any involvement, such as
providing advice, opinions, counsel or cultural information, is
beyond the purview of the interpreter. Responsibility for the
content and direction of the interview lies with the attending
parties.
-
Remaining
Impartial and Uninvolved:
The interpreter does not have any
vested interest in the outcome of the interview. When interpreting
for MOSAIC, interpreters are to refrain from providing services to
family members, friends or acquaintances and must decline
assignments when there is an actual or perceived conflict of
interest, or any factor or belief that may influence objectivity.
When the interpreter knows either the client or the attending
professional in any
capacity beyond the provision of interpreting services, this must be
reported to a Customer Service Worker.
-
Respecting and
Abiding by Strict Rules of Confidentiality:
The interpreter does not disclose
information related to the time, place, persons, purpose or content
of any interpretation assignment to anyone not bound by the
commitment of confidentiality without the express permission of all
parties or unless required by law.
-
Acknowledging
Professional Limitations:
When the language being used by the
client or the attending professional is unclear or not known to the interpreter, the
interpreter is obliged to acknowledge his/her limitations in
expertise and to seek clarification. When an error in interpretation
has been made and the interpreter becomes aware of it, the
interpreter is obliged to immediately report the fact to the parties
involved.
-
Remaining True
to the Source Language and Preserving the Integrity of the Message:
The goal is to achieve, in the target
language, the equivalent meaning and style of the source language.
-
Continued Competence:
The interpreter will maintain his/her
qualifications and will maintain and expand his/her skills through
formal or informal continuing education.
-
Professional
Conduct:
The interpreter will complete all
assignments he/she has accepted at the appointed date, time and
place, and will perform his/her duties as unobtrusively as possible.
-
Respecting Clients, Attending Professionals and Colleagues:
MOSAIC's
Treatment of Contractors Policy
establishes the guidelines and
expectations for interpreter conduct.
