Free Popular Theatre Program for Immigrant and Refugee Youth
What’s Popular Theatre?
POPULAR THEATRE, also called Theatre of the Oppressed, is a participatory theatre that creates spaces of dialogue where participants can explore their life experiences using theatre. Created by Augusto Boal, Popular Theatre is a set of group games and theatre exercises that lead participants into the gradual creation of scenes or plays from the real stories of their lives. Popular theatre is a way of practicing how we can make the positive changes we want to see in our lives. Participants then show their plays to audiences at public interactive theatre forums, which create community dialogues around important issues and possible solutions to challenges in our lives and in the world.
What is NuYu?
NuYu is a youth program for immigrant and refugee youth that uses popular theatre as a tool for participants to connect with each other and explore their lives. In the training sessions, we play lots of games, talk about our lives, and create theatre scenes together.
It’s creative, interactive, and tons of fun!
NuYu is lots of fun and a great way to connect with other young people who are also immigrants and refugees living in Greater Vancouver. It’s also a chance to be creative and learn tools for creative expression to be more seen and heard in your school and communities. NuYu also provides snacks and bus tickets at each session, and an honorarium at the end of the program for completion. Participation can also count towards towards community hours of volunteer/work experience for the Graduation Transitions Program.
Who Can Participate?
ALL youth who are immigrants or refugees are invited to join. Generally, participants are between 14 and 19 years old, but if you are a bit younger or older and really interested, let us know. You must also be committed to coming to all of the training sessions (this is not a drop-in program). There’s usually approximately ten training sessions, and they happen once or twice a week.
When is the next NuYu?
The next NuYu begins in October. The application deadline is September 23, 2011.
